I think it is safe to say that just about every athlete is familiar with protein powder. The amount of various options of protein powder is just amazing. You can get protein made out of whey, hemp, peas, soybeans, milk, egg whites and many other things that I can’t even think of.
There is, of course, the dependable go-to that is Whey protein, which is a milk-derived protein that is known for its fast-digestion.
There is also the lesser-known Casein protein, which is the only other milk-derived protein, and is known for its slow digestion.
In addition to those classic milk-derived proteins, is the large, ever-increasing variety of plant-based proteins. Here, the plants used include chia, hemp, and pea, among others.
There is unsurprisingly, another type of protein, one that is even lesser-known than Casein protein. Here, I am talking about egg-white protein.
Most people probably know that eggs are loaded with ‘good stuff’. In addition to high levels of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, eggs contain 7 grams of essential protein, and only 75 calories. Egg whites have 6 grams of the protein and the yolk only has 1 gram.
Egg white protein powders are derived from egg whites, which are the part of the egg that contains the protein. Because they are derived from eggs, in addition to the essential proteins, you also get extremely high levels of the nutrients found in eggs, adding to the overall health of these types of protein powder.
Here are the top three egg white protein powders currently on the market:
From Julian Baker, a California-based manufacturer who focuses on producing paleo-friendly products comes this Paleo Protein powder.
With a high rating on Amazon, this soy and GMO free protein powder comes in a large variety of flavors. These include Chocolate, Double Chocolate, Cinnamon Roll, Coconut Cream. Espresso, Glazed Donut, Plain, Pumpkin Pie, Vanilla, Vanilla Nut, and Unflavored.
The unflavored option, which is a great choice if you are seeking a highly versatile protein powder, contains only two ingredients; egg white protein and sunflower lecithin.
We already know the benefits and necessity of protein, but lecithin is an ingenious addition to their product – lecithin is known to lower cholesterol, improve heart health, fight dementia, and moisturize your skin.
A two pound container is a bargain, especially when considering the high costs of many protein powders on the market.
For the quality and simplicity of the ingredients in this protein powder, and considering the reasonable price, the value of it simply increases.
This powder contains 25 grams of egg white protein, 108 calories, one gram of carbs, and one gram of sugars per serving. In comparison to many more traditional protein powders out there, this is on the lower end in terms of calories, sugars, and carbohydrates per serving, making it a healthier option.
This protein powder is also known for its incredible mixability, as well as its high content of BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) which are imperative for muscle growth. This option is well-regarded as a natural way to introduce greater levels of protein into your diet.
Naked Nutrition’s dedication to using pure, clean, and simple ingredients to produce straightforward supplements is well-known. In keeping with that philosophy, their Egg White protein powder contains only two ingredients; egg white powder and sunflower lecithin, the same two ingredients found in Julian Bakery’s Paleo Protein powder.
This all natural, non GMO, dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free protein powder contains 25 grams of protein, 110 calories, two grams of carbs, zero grams of sugar, and 5.8 grams of BCAAs per serving.
Like Julian Bakery’s powder, Naked Nutrition’s Egg White Protein Powder is low in both calories and carbs, and contains no sugars, making it a healthier, more-natural option.
Naked Nutrition’s Egg White Protein Powder is definitely on the more expensive side, which highlights the largest difference between this and Julian Bakery’s powder. It comes in three flavors; Chocolate, Vanilla, and Unflavored, and has an average rating on Amazon.
It has a mild taste, which is optimal in a protein powder, and mixes well. Overall, it is a good option, it just has the drawback of a price tag that might make it inaccessible for some people.
The award winning NOW Foods supplements company is recognized as one of the best in sports nutrition. Now Sports, a derivative of Now Foods, is selling their own take on egg white protein powder, at an affordable price for a 1.2-pound tub.
This puts their product at around the same price as Julian Bakery’s protein powder made out of egg whites.
This unflavored, non GMO protein powder contains only 16 grams of protein per serving, making it the weakest of the three options. Even though it is lower in protein levels, it is also much lower in calories, at only 80 calories per serving, making it better if you’re looking for a low-calorie option.
Among a variety of quality assurance ratings and certifications, this product has a high rating on Amazon, making it one of the more popular options. It is a well-liked product, providing a stable, healthy, delicious, and highly mixable protein powder to all kinds of athletes for years.
These are three good options. When looking for a protein powder made out of egg whites, look for products with few ingredients; you want simple, you want clean, and you want pure.
Out of all of these, my personal favorite has to be Julian Bakery’s egg white protein powder, due to the high quality of the ingredients as well as the highly affordable price.
But, a lot of this comes down to personal preference, so it doesn’t hurt to try a few out before you settle for one. Regardless, having this unique type of protein as an option provides a great addition to the diets of every athlete.
